Santorini

Santorini
Sunny days
The orderly chaos of disembarking from the ferry at Santorini.  It’s go, go, go to find a taxi, bus or in our case the hotel transport.

Three days on Santorini have flown by. It’s an island of contrasts from immense luxury in the white-washed tourist towns to the ordinariness of the small villages on the plains.
From our balcony we could see the caldera and the constant visiting of cruise ships arriving and departing. Tenders cross for many hours taking all ashore.
The blinding whiteness takes your breath away.  Overlooking the ubiquitous blue domed church over the caldera.  Our first sighting from our balcony was memorable.

Whitewashed buildings everywhere.
The real Santorini....trying to capture at one of the famous vantage points.

Got it! Took a bit of jostling.

We explored the towns of Oia (the main tourist town with the ubiquitous blue domed churches), Fira, Firostefani  (where we are staying) and a couple of beaches when we hired a car.
Enmeshed with the Santorini experience is wining and dining at many of the wonderful restaurants with superb views.
The first full day in Santorini was taken up with walking from Ferostafani to Oia, a distance of 11kms. It was a hot day so we covered ourselves well and applied plenty of sunscreen. Oia is picture perfect with lots of alleyways for photos. It can also be very busy when the cruise ships arrive.
Had to wear the sea colours!

The four of us....we took our sunglasses off...all that dazzling white.

On the way to Oia....11kms went by very quickly as we snapped photos away at every corner.  Truly beautiful.

After our big hike we managed to catch a bus back to our accommodation to prepare for another evening sitting on our deck, watching the sunset and sipping homemade Aperol Spritz.
A day of leisure beckoned and after a morning of exploring, catching the wrong bus and accidentally bumping into our travelling companions it was decided a pedicure was in order. It was lovely to have some leisure time.
One must wear white on Santorini...and a wonderful Aperol Spritz at the end of the day....and just add  a spectacular sunset.
Our balcony...such luxury.

Weddings were pretty constant on the balcony below us.
Red Beach....a task to get to but very popular.

Black Beach....we had lunch at a restaurant which entitled us to the sun beds.  The water was a fabulous clear blue.

Santorini is fabulous and breathtaking. Everywhere we have turned we have run out of superlatives. It’s flash, luxurious, touristy and fun.
From our balcony we have seen numerous weddings conducted on the terraces below us and we have to agree there is no more a romantic location than Santorini with its whitewashed backdrop.
Tomorrow we head for Croatia with an early morning start via Athens to join a small group tour of Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Slovenia, Montenegro.
